A life changing sum of money October 24, 2006

I was just thinking about my financial circumstances and wishing, like thousands of others around the world, that I had just that little bit more. However, most people are usually saying things like ‘I wish I had a million pounds!’ or ‘Wouldn’t it be great to not have to ever worry about money’. I do agree that being a millionaire would definitely have its benefits, but it’s a highly unrealistic prospect. I therefore started thinking about what would be a realistic life changing amount of money for me?
I realised that £9000 (16800 USD, 13400 Euros, 2011143 JPY) would actually be a life changing amount. Whilst this is still a very sizeable chunk of money, it’s nowhere near that million mark! £9000 would essentially allow me to clear the debt that I accumulated over my time at university and leave me with a clean slate and a fresh start, which to me would be life changing.
If you are honest and realistic, what would be a life changing sum of money for you? I would be interested to hear.

I don’t have any debt accumulated ..but I would love to get about $25,000 so that I can go on a World tour 🙂 Oh, and another $35,000 would be nice too..I can buy a nice car!
A world tour and new car would be great, but may I put the question, would they be definitely life changing or just enjoyable?
Oh yes! I didn’t think about that..well let me revise my answer then. $7000 every month would be nice. This can be achieved by getting a good job when I complete my MBA. That would be life changing for sure. I am ready to let go of any one-time bulk amount. What I am looking for is a stable, good source of income 🙂
I couldn’t agree more, $7000 equates to a gross salary in the UK of £45000, very nice indeed! Especially as the average is currently in the region of £18000. However, at the present time the prospect of earning that kind of income is many years off!

I agree! What you need is all relative, and the amount that is life changing to you is different for each person. We would possibly need considerably more than £9000, because like you I started my working life with university debt and unfortunately unless you are careful it grows rather than shrinks over the years! We certainly don’t need as much as £1,000000 though. Also, if you had too much – for instance if you won the Euro Millions Jackpot, then it could actually give you such a different life that you wouldn’t be you. What I would like is my life without any financial stress or horrible bank letters ever again. So whatever it takes to get me that far is how much I would like to change my life succesfully!

Defintely, I actually like who I am! I couldn’t gurantee that I wouldn’t chnage if I became ridiculously wealthy, so therefore have no desire to do so. However, never to have to to really stress about money would be just incredible.
Unfortunately for me, I think a life-changing amount would be a lot more than £9k. I’ve still got my debts from Uni (really ought to start paying them back) but I’ve also got a good job so I’m now used to being paid more money than I’ve ever had. So for me, life-changing would mean being able to give up work for a time so that I could go pursue a dream, say to start my own business or something. So really, it’d be more like £100,000 minimum. But hell, that wouldn’t even buy a house nowadays. In fact, £1,000,000 today isn’t nothing like the sum of money it used to be, say, 10 or 20 years ago.

Congratulations on the job, all the financial investment into studying finally paying dividends! I certainly wouldn’t say no to more than 9K, but yeah, it doesn’t go far today!

What an interesting question! I love reading/learning all I can about personal finance, and I’ve thought about lotteries and inheritances a lot, but this is a new twist on the question.
A life-changing amount of money for me would be just enough to pay off all my debt. With all my debt gone, and everything else just the same as it is now, I’d have an extra $2000 per month to do as I please with.
And I have to admit, the thought of that kind of money makes me drool.
